Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, demons, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within the city.

Warning: Revealing details for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of heroes who will separate from the main group to begin their independent quest, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Introduction, intertwining the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the events of the third episode demonstrate why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to go next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose demise started the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his selfish purposes, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, seeks revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could assist the team reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter vowed a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are hunted by the powers that control the setting for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the remote area in quest for the traitor.

What’s Next?

According to the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the warrior group won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight cast members to assemble the Seekers and Planners groups.

Fans can look forward to discovering which players will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
