The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
