Resurgent Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hard courts

A revitalized Medvedev claimed his first trophy for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a former number one, has endured a difficult period, managing just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.

His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in specific - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and finally parting ways with long-term coach Cervara.

Currently working with Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has consistently improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Moutet.

This represents the player's maiden trophy since the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt from spring of the previous year.

Victory also means he has won twenty-one victories at 21 distinct tournaments.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a event with my children at once, so to get a trophy is especially meaningful," commented world number 14 the champion.

"This championship is in tribute of my younger daughter her name, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his previous six championship matches, featuring in that event in the past months.

Medvedev's counter-punching play style and regular reactions on the playing surface had caused commentators to question if his ability to perform at the highest level was over.

Yet the player has altered his approach in the past month, striving to advance forward and perform positively, backed up by an enhanced service.

The champion fought back from a break down in the initial set against the challenging opponent, taking 4 of the last five exchanges to take the lead.

The competitors traded break points in the middle set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden tour championship, took control to push for a third set.

The opponent defended four initial break points in a tight third set before Medvedev broke to 15 to serve for the match.

Suitably, he secured the win with a point at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to control a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
