The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
