The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
